On and off since the border to border bike ride I drove a support vehicle for in October 2001 I've had a strong interest in road cycling. Back then I didn't know anyone in the area where I lived (Irving, Texas) that rode, so I didn't pick up the sport at the time, but that would all change.
By July of 2004 I had been living in California for almost a year, and I decided that I needed to start taking better care of myself. In August of 2004 I bought myself a bicycle so I could get out and start getting some exercise. I didn't spend a lot on my bike, since I wanted to make sure I'd enjoy riding before I spent a ton of cash. I wound up buying a house brand bike form my local bike shop for around $600, and have truly enjoyed riding ever since then.
I also bought myself a trainer, which would allow me to get on my bike and peddle in the office while I watch a movie, or training DVD. The trainer allows me to get on the bike for some exercise without having to load my bike/gear up, then have to drive someplace to ride. Plus, if it's raining, it's much safer to ride/peddle indoors.
I signed up for the Tour de Cure scheduled for May 1, 2005, in support of the American Diabetes Association. The ADA needs as much attention as it can get. Their cause really hits home for me since my father had diabetes, in addition to my uncle, several extended family members, and my 16 year old nephew. Did you know that each year, more people die from diabetes than do from AIDS and breast cancer combined? See my philanthropy page for more details on the Tour de Cure, and the ADA.
